Pediatricians favor AAP guidance over revised CDC vaccine schedule

A significant divide is emerging in the U.S. healthcare system as numerous states and pediatricians announce their continued adherence to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines, bypassing the revised, more limited schedule recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This sudden shift in federal policy has ignited intense debate over scientific integrity and public trust.

Core differences between the two schedules:

  • AAP (Maintaining stability): The AAP’s 2026 schedule continues to recommend routine immunizations for 18 diseases, including Hepatitis A and B, influenza, Rotavirus, and meningococcal disease. The AAP also maintains its 2-dose HPV vaccine recommendation and COVID-19 vaccinations for toddlers aged 6-23 months.

  • CDC (Restricting scope): The updated federal schedule has moved several previously routine vaccines to “high-risk” categories or recommended “shared clinical decision-making.” Notably, RSV immunization was also reclassified for high-risk groups rather than being recommended for all infants under 8 months.

Medical community response:

AAP leaders have characterized the CDC’s changes as “dangerous and unnecessary.” The AAP schedule is currently endorsed by 12 major medical organizations, including the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

Experts argue that the constant shifting of federal recommendations is undermining parental confidence. Pediatricians at major hospitals emphasize that “the science hasn’t changed,” asserting they will continue to rely on long-standing evidence-based medicine to protect children’s health, despite the new direction from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
