The Drug Administration of Vietnam has officially issued a nationwide recall for 291 personal care products following an update to the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive. The ban specifically targets Cyclotetrasiloxane and Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (commonly known as D4 silicone), which have been added to the prohibited substances list.
Industry experts note that these chemicals were previously favored in sunscreens, makeup removers, and hair care products for their smoothing and glossing properties. However, global toxicological research has linked long-term exposure to these substances with endocrine disruption and potential reproductive health risks. Furthermore, their bioaccumulative nature poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and the natural food chain.
The recall encompasses a wide range of domestic and imported brands. Companies holding these products must immediately halt distribution, reclaim stock from retailers, and carry out supervised destruction. Authorities advise consumers to scrutinize ingredient labels and cease using any items on the prohibited list to protect their long-term well-being.
