Ho Chi Minh City upgrades 13 regional health centers into general hospitals

In a move to optimize inpatient treatment capacity and modernize the healthcare network, the city’s health department is implementing a roadmap to convert regional health centers with inpatient beds into professional hospital models.

Healthcare system restructuring roadmap

According to the latest proposal from the Department of Health, the reorganization of these units will take place in two specific phases, starting in March 2026. Following the transfer of preventive medicine and commune-level health stations to local management, the remaining personnel and infrastructure of centers with inpatient beds will focus entirely on primary medical examination and treatment.

This renaming is not merely a title change; it aims to prepare the necessary conditions for deploying both basic and advanced treatment techniques, meeting the standards of a specialized metropolitan area.

Completion and evaluation phase

For the two units in Bac Tan Uyen and Phu My, the Department of Health will continue to closely monitor operational efficiency before making a final decision by July 1, 2026. Depending on their actual capacity, these facilities may either become independent general hospitals or be integrated as secondary campuses for upper-level hospitals, ensuring a scientific approach aligned with the city’s healthcare master plan.
