Vietnam engages in dialogue with 13 nations on food safety policy reforms

On April 7, the Ministry of Health held a working session with representatives from 13 embassies and international delegations (including the US, EU, Japan, South Korea, and the UK) to discuss the implementation of new legal regulations and the direction for amending the Law on Food Safety.

The dialogue focused on the following key areas:

  • Policy Consultation and Adjustment: The Ministry of Health acknowledged feedback from the international business community regarding the implementation of Decree No. 46/2026/ND-CP. The decision to pause certain provisions for a comprehensive impact assessment was highly commended by international partners as a sign of transparency and receptiveness.

  • Developing a Modern Legal Framework: Deputy Minister Do Xuan Tuyen emphasized that policy improvements would be based on balancing domestic realities with international practices. The core objective is to protect public health without creating unreasonable trade barriers.

  • Administrative Reforms in the New Draft Law: Scheduled for submission to the Government in July 2026, the draft Law on Food Safety (amended) will focus on risk management, decentralized governance, digitalization of management systems, and exploring mutual recognition mechanisms for quality standards between countries.

  • Bilateral Responsibility: The Ministry requested embassies to share advanced governance models. Simultaneously, it highlighted the role of enterprises in self-regulating quality standards starting from the exporting country, preventing the misuse of streamlined policies to introduce substandard products into the Vietnamese market.

International representatives committed to continuing their support for Vietnam in perfecting its legal system to promote sustainable trade and expand safe choices for consumers.
