Vietnam Social Security has recently issued Official Dispatch No. 160/BHXH-TTKS to monitor the distribution of long-term medications across provinces. This move aligns with the implementation of Circular 26/2025/TT-BYT, a regulatory document that introduces fundamental changes to outpatient treatment protocols.
Key regulatory updates:
-
Extended medication supply: Instead of the previous 30-day limit, physicians are now authorized to prescribe medication for up to 90 days per visit.
-
Scope of application: The regulation covers 252 specific disease groups listed for long-term management. This policy is applied uniformly to all patients, regardless of their health insurance status.
-
Clinical criteria: The exact quantity of medication dispensed will be determined based on the clinical progression and health stability of each individual.
Objectives and implementation responsibilities:
Easing prescription limits aims to reduce travel burdens and administrative hurdles for the public while ensuring the continuity of treatment regimens. Particularly, with extended holidays like the 2026 Lunar New Year approaching, providing an adequate supply of medicine allows patients to be more proactive in managing their health at home.
The Ministry of Health also mandates that medical facilities enhance staff training on new procedures and strictly supervise to prevent unjustified medical services or equipment usage that could impact the insurance fund. Healthcare providers will be held accountable for any failures in instructing patients on medication use or monitoring abnormal symptoms.
