Can Tho restructures healthcare system following administrative expansion

The reorganization of administrative units has created an urgent need for Can Tho’s healthcare sector to enhance its service capacity, aligning with its role as the medical hub of the Mekong Delta. Under the new roadmap, the public health apparatus has been streamlined from 70 units to 48. Notably, 103 commune and ward health stations have been transferred to local government management to strengthen autonomy in primary healthcare.

A key highlight is the shift from reactive treatment to proactive disease prevention. The city has operationalized 13 family doctor clinics and implemented digital platforms for personal health record management, allowing citizens to book remote consultations. In 2025, the local healthcare system served over 11.7 million outpatient visits, confirming its regional expertise through the deployment of advanced diagnostic techniques, such as the 64-slice CT Scanner funded via socialized investment.

For the 2026 – 2030 period, Can Tho estimates a funding requirement of nearly 2,800 billion VND to upgrade and construct its primary healthcare network. The city aims to ensure that by 2026, 100% of residents receive periodic health check-ups or free screenings at least once a year, while completing the electronic medical record system across all inpatient facilities.
