Chinese market regulators have recently ordered all infant formula producers to conduct mandatory testing for cereulide toxins. This directive follows a massive global recall involving major dairy corporations such as Nestlé, Danone, and Lactalis, affecting products in over 60 countries.
The regulatory body emphasized that manufacturers must implement rigorous quality control measures, particularly regarding the acceptance of raw materials. The safety concerns originated from ARA—a fatty acid essential for infant nutrition—supplied by Wuhan-based Cabio Biotech. This ingredient is suspected of being contaminated with cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria that can lead to gastrointestinal issues, including vomiting and diarrhea.
While the nationwide testing mandate has been issued, Chinese authorities stated that no domestic cases of cereulide poisoning linked to infant formula have been reported to date. Meanwhile, official investigations are ongoing in France and Switzerland to assess potential exposure in infants. The recall of suspected batches has now been extended across multiple regions, including Asia, the Americas, and Africa.
