Singapore and Germany expand infant formula recalls over toxin concerns

Food safety authorities in Singapore and Germany have recently issued expanded recall notices for several batches of Dumex and Aptamil infant formula. The action follows the detection of cereulide, a hazardous toxin produced by bacteria, within the products.

Specific products involved in the recall:

  • In Singapore: The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has added two types of Dumex Dulac (Stage 1 and Stage 2) 800g tins, with expiration dates in September 2027, to the recall list. These products were manufactured in Thailand. This brings the total number of affected imported batches in Singapore to nine.

  • In Germany: Danone has voluntarily withdrawn three Aptamil product lines (Pronutra Pre, Pronutra 1 DE, and Profutura Duo Pre D) with expiration dates ranging from late 2026 to early 2027. These batches were identified as being produced in mid-2025.

The risks of cereulide toxin: Cereulide is a toxin generated by Bacillus cereus bacteria and is notably heat-stable. This means that standard preparation methods, such as using boiling water or typical cooking processes, are ineffective at neutralizing the toxin. Ingestion by infants can trigger rapid food poisoning symptoms, including severe vomiting and abdominal cramps.

Global industry context: The incidents in Singapore and Germany are linked to a broader global quality crisis in the dairy industry that began in early January 2026. The issue originated from a shared raw material supplier serving major corporations including Nestlé, Danone, and Lactalis. Beyond the significant financial impact, international investigators are now examining potential links between the contaminated batches and serious health complications in infants.

Health officials urge parents to immediately verify the batch codes of their current formula against the official warning lists and cease use if a match is found.
