In countries like the UK, dairy milk is a primary source of iodine because the mineral is added to livestock feed. As consumers shift to plant-based alternatives—which typically do not contain iodine naturally—they inadvertently eliminate a major dietary source. Iodine is a crucial nutrient for brain development, particularly in fetuses and young children. Even mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy can adversely affect a child’s later cognitive and linguistic abilities.

Scientists emphasize that individuals can maintain brain health while consuming plant-based milk, provided they ensure sufficient iodine intake from other sources, such as iodized salt or fortified foods.
