SK bioscience signs technology transfer deal for local chickenpox vaccine production in Colombia

South Korean vaccine innovator SK bioscience has finalized a definitive technology transfer and manufacturing agreement with the Colombian government, enabling the South American country to locally produce the firm’s proprietary chickenpox vaccine, SKYVaricella. SK bioscience executed the partnership directly with Colombia’s state-owned pharmaceutical entity, VECOL, to support the nation’s strategic vaccine localization initiative. Overseen by Colombia’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection alongside its National Health Institute (Instituto Nacional de Salud), the program is designed to strengthen national vaccine self-sufficiency and public health preparedness. Concurrently, the cross-border venture establishes a critical strategic foothold for SK bioscience’s broader commercial expansion across the Latin American region.

The primary operational frameworks and transactional parameters governing the collaboration feature:

  • Operational Allocation and Technical Roles: Under the terms of the contract, SK bioscience is mandated to supply its advanced manufacturing expertise and technology assets to develop a localized production facility in Colombia. The South Korean corporation will additionally manage initial product introduction, regional regulatory clearances, and core production operations. Conversely, VECOL will supervise the physical establishment and daily operations of the facility, secure government licensing, execute integration into the National Immunization Program (NIP), and coordinate with domestic public health authorities.

  • Capital Layout and Project Timeline: The long-term industrial healthcare initiative is projected to generate a total consolidated capital investment of $260 million distributed over a ten-year horizon.

  • Strategic Expansion Rights: Utilizing the localized infrastructure, SK bioscience intends to explore secondary commercializations for broader immunization products by leveraging its secured “preferential negotiation rights for vaccines to be introduced through the facility”. These future expansion tracks will extend beyond SK’s proprietary vaccine portfolio to encompass alternative shots that may be formally adopted by the Colombian government in the future.

Lucia Ayala, President of VECOL, characterized the validation of the contract as a transformative operational milestone that builds local technical knowledge and lays a sustainable foundation for recovering strategic capacities in public health and health sovereignty. Furthermore, the localized manufacturing partnership successfully advances the macro-growth strategy instituted by SK bioscience in 2022 to aggressively scale its core vaccine business across diversified global markets.
