ADENOVIRUS CASES TRIPLE TO 2,777 AMONG CHILDREN, RAISING SUMMER ALERT

Vietnam is experiencing a notable increase in adenovirus infections among children, prompting pediatric specialists to reinforce public health warnings as summer activities and group gatherings intensify.

According to the National Children’s Hospital, the number of laboratory-confirmed adenovirus infections has risen significantly since the beginning of 2026, with cases reported at approximately three times the level recorded during the same period last year. The hospital has also observed a continued increase in infections during the summer months, highlighting the seasonal nature of respiratory virus transmission among children.

Healthcare professionals note that adenovirus spreads easily through close personal contact, respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. Settings where children gather including schools, childcare facilities, swimming classes and recreational centers can facilitate transmission when preventive hygiene measures are insufficient.

Seasonal activities can increase transmission risks

Summer vacation often brings children into closer contact through camps, sports programs and swimming activities, creating additional opportunities for respiratory viruses to spread.

Although many adenovirus infections are mild and self-limiting, the virus can cause more severe illness in young children, particularly those with underlying medical conditions or weakened immune systems. Clinical presentations may include respiratory infections, conjunctivitis or gastrointestinal symptoms, depending on the viral strain.
